With Plutocracy (Gov reform and Idea Group) and Trade, it's entirely possible to end up with seven(!) merchants by about 1500 if you were trying to focus trade income and didn't realize just how many merchants you'd get. Some of the Trade+ policies look super juicy, but the idea group itself looks like it runs into diminishing returns very fast.

So what gives? Are Trade ideas only valuable for very large nations that can control multiple trade zones (like Russia/China)? Is there some DLC-locked feature that allows you to use merchants for other things? I've run into a similar situation in a Champa game, where Plutocracy+Trade ideas+Govt Reforms gave me so many merchants I couldn't place all of them due to trade range. Even if I was able to move to the Gulf of Aden trade node (which is a pipe dream at this point), that only has three other nodes feeding into it, which means I'd have an extra merchant lying around. Problem is: Trade gives a whopping 3(!) extra merchants when completed. Obviously, Maritime and Exploration aren't particularly useful at the moment (I don't even have a port!), so I took a look at trade for extra income.

I currently have a glut of Diplo power, and I'm likely to have that glut for the foreseeable future (my you heir is a 2/6/4, and he's in his 20s), so I was thinking about grabbing a diplomatic idea group first (I don't want to take an Admin group because that slows down future idea groups, and I'm somewhat behind on military as-is).
